Richard Lambert, owner of Lambert Group dba The ARM Group and RCsecured, just announced the formation of this special program. The service is designed to support non-profit organizations in Napa/Sonoma County and the Bay Area that need and want the support of an Information Technology firm and the full functionality of a Windows Small Business server, but on a limited budget.

Our first Beta client is Fair Housing of Napa Valley with six users. We are supplying them with a complete Windows network environment that will fulfill the needs of most small non-profits. The servers will be hosted and maintained by our firm.

We are using the latest technologies to support this effort and to limit the environmental impact.

Our system is designed in a private cloud using virtualized servers and redundant mass storage devices that will support a number of organizations while providing security and full privacy to our clients.

By doing it this way, we can support multiple non-profit organizations with up to 20 users at a reduced cost and ensure that all the systems and software are kept at the latest versions.

This service will provide them with full Microsoft Exchange (Outlook) abilities, spam-filtering, backup service and all the server maintenance and updates for a low per-user fee.

Mr. Lambert stated “in this time of limited funds, non-profits are hurt by lack of donations, but still have the need for technology.”
The best way for Lambert Group to support them at this time is to create a system that lets them function with everything they need and provide the support to ensure that it runs properly at a reduced cost.

If the Beta site performs as well as we think it will we will open it up to other non-profit organizations on a first come, first serve basis. Not all non-profit organizations will meet the criteria for this service as designed,stated Mr. Lambert. “As we see the need to grow, then we will expand the service to support other organizations in the future. Our goal is to create a system that not only support the needs of non-profits but can assist other organization such as some smaller towns or schools that have seen their revenues dry up.”

MSRE in Santa Rosa CA, reached out to The ARM Group because they had an email server issue – the online training giant could not get their email out and couldn’t find out why.

The ARM Group arrived on site to trouble-shoot their MS Exchange / ISA 2006 “email down” error they were seeing. The ARM Group team stayed on the case at MSRE until 9p – finding that the main problem was that the three MSRE MS Exchange Servers were acting as open relays — exploited for spamming to the world!

Unknown to MSRE, their email system was being hacked to the tune of over 200,000 total messages!  After the relays were closed – The ARM Group found that the relays mail would still not route or receive mail. Cory Vader, The ARM Group’s lead engineer, found the queue directory that was holding all the bad mail and he tried to delete it manually. This locked up the system immediately due to the large volume he was trying to delete.  So Cory simply created a new queue folder, renamed the old folder and resolved the issue – they thought – until their emails began slow to a trickle and then stop again almost immediately.

The ARM Group engineering team  found that MSRE had an ISA server in place with Firewall rules that were misconfigured. Cory and his team rebuilt the rules dictating that all email travel via proper ports,  from proper IP addresses. Email transmission was still locked down to accept traffic from AppRiver – preventing hackers from circumventing the spam filter.  After the ARM Group contacted AppRiver – they discovered that AppRiver had disabled their smart host / access due to the large volume of Spam that was coming from the MSRE servers. Was the MSRE IT mail server puzzle solved? NOT YET!

At this point, mail began moving around internally — but mail would not move outside the LAN nor come in from the WAN. The last technical challenge that the ARM Group found — turned out to be a misconfigured connector.  The Default SMTP connector was pointing to the wrong server!  As soon as Cory addressed this issue — mail started routing immediately.

Moving forward, The ARM Group ensured that all the Juniper devices were configured with the same rules – so this would never happen again.

After this initial engagement, The ARM Group earned a long term network maintenance position — helping MSRE structure, move and rebuild their entire network environment.

The ARM Group engineers have now built and deployed a high availability, multi redundant world class networking environment for MSRE. This environment includes the latest in network attached storage array along with a full virtualization of multiple servers.
